The Story Behind Gaia’s Embrace: A Love Letter to My Heritage

The Story Behind Gaia’s Embrace: A Love Letter to My Heritage

Every stitch in Gaia’s Embrace carries a piece of my story. As a designer, I wanted my first collection to reflect not just my creativity, but my identity. Here’s how I turned my heritage into wearable art. I wanted my first collection to be an extension of myself—something that told a story about who I am and where I come from. That’s when the idea struck: why not create pieces inspired by my heritage?

The Inspiration Behind Gaia’s Embrace

Each design in Gaia’s Embrace represents a different part of my background, woven together to form a collection that is, at its core, a blend of me. It felt like the perfect way to introduce Yinia to the world—not just as a brand, but as a visual expression of the person behind it.

The inspiration for this collection truly came to life during my solo travels through Italy last year. I was captivated by the way art—whether in the form of statues, paintings, or even fashion—celebrated the beauty of the human form. Everything around me was an opportunity for artistic expression. The way fabrics draped across bodies, the richness of colours in clothes, in oil paintings and in architecture, the romanticism of it all—I fell in love with the way art and clothing could enhance the human figure.

A Tribute to Art, Nature, and Culture

With Gaia’s Embrace, I wanted to merge these influences: the elegance of the human body, the raw beauty of nature, and the cultural roots that have shaped me. This collection is an homage to Mother Nature, artistry, and heritage—brought together in a way that feels deeply personal yet universally beautiful.

The Pieces:

Eire bustier

The first piece I began working on, The Éire Bustier, (pronounced 'eye-ra') is a tribute to my Irish heritage, embodying a sense of lightness and ethereal beauty. Its delicate, airy appearance is reminiscent of vintage elegance, with subtle influences from the Renaissance era—a time when garments were designed to celebrate form, structure, and intricate detail.

The bodice, crafted from a patterned gold poly-blend, immediately reminded me of  antique textiles found in vintage clothing combined with elements of Ireland -the misty, rugged coastlines, the whispers of ancient folklore, and the timeless beauty woven into its culture . Its intricate design echoes the ornate fabrics of Renaissance fashion, lending a timeless, regal feel to the piece. Lined with soft satin gold for comfort, the bodice is structured with boning rods to sculpt and define the bust, creating a striking yet graceful silhouette. Complementing this, the waist piece is made from pleated 100% cotton muslin, enhancing the body's natural curves while ensuring breathability and ease of movement.

Éire is a harmonious blend of past and present—a fusion of heritage, artistry, and craftsmanship that speaks to both history and modern design

Eire Corset

An extension of the Eire Bustier, the Eire Corset has the same feel, but with an elevated edge. I fell in love with the combination of these two fabrics and wanted to use them again somehow. I loved the idea of a scarf piece somewhere in the collection and believed this to be the perfect opportunity and so, through trial and error, the Eire Corset was born.

Scandi

The well structured and fitted corset that is Scandi represents my roots from Scandinavia. Its pure pearly-cream Dupion silk reminded me of glacial lands and the brightness of the Scandinavia. The Dupion silk that I used gives the piece a slight rustic feel and yet compliments the hand-sewn attached amber gemstones and silver lined beads along the soft square neckline. It is lined with a soft crepe which allows comfort in such a form fitting piece.

Scandi is the perfect sculpting piece, allowing for adjustment of tightness with eyelets and ribbon at the back and boning that runs in sections down the bodice, it moulds seamlessly to the body, creating a refined silhouette.

Sierra Leone

One of my favorite pieces in the collection, this design is deeply inspired by my Sierra Leonean heritage. The rich, warm tones and luxurious textures of Dupion satin and deep honey lace instantly drew me to its name. It evoked visions of the vibrant West African landscapes—alive with warmth, energy, and a culture as dynamic as its people. The intricate layering of fabrics, paired with a myriad of eyelets, brings everything together, creating a piece that feels both rooted in tradition and uniquely expressive.

It is lined with a golden satin for comfort and has honey ribbon that ties all four sections into one, as well as 100% cotton muslin pleated straps to bring a lightness to such a rich piece.

Maasai

Tied to my tribal roots, this design is inspired by the rich traditions and strength of the Maasai tribe and their true connection to the land. The deep olive green silk, with its rustic, earthy essence, reflects the vast open landscapes of the Maasai homeland—lush, untamed, and deeply connected to nature. The structured bustier cups bring a sense of empowerment and definition, reminiscent of the tribe’s bold, symbolic adornments. Lined with a soft brushed crepe, the piece balances strength and structure with comfort. I fell in love with this type of silk at first sight, I believed that its rustic nature brought life to pieces such as the Maasai and really accentuated the feel of ties to Mother Nature and the human body being one.

Adorned with simple silver eyelets and a delicate ribbon tie, this effortless yet striking piece exudes understated elegance. Its refined presence allows the body to speak for itself, enhancing the skin’s natural glow while adding a subtle touch of shine and natural colour to the collection.

J à

This deep green well structured corset was inspired by my Jamaican heritage.  Radiating elements of the flag and Jamaican culture and colours with its green dupion silk, burnt amber Japanese dupion satin and honey yellow ribbon crossings along the front over white cotton muslin. I felt this piece was the perfect embodiment of Jamaica, a vibrant addition to a collection deeply inspired by Mother Nature. It offers a subtle nod to Jamaica’s essence while seamlessly blending with the rest of the collection, maintaining a delicate harmony between cultural influence and natural beauty.

With boning running through every segment, adjustable eyelets with a delicate ribbon tie, and a cotton muslin strap for added lift, this piece offers exceptional support. Designed to enhance and define the body's natural shape, it sculpts effortlessly for a beautifully flattering fit

Savannah

Inspired by the vast and untamed landscapes of Africa, this piece captures the essence of the sun-drenched savannah. Luxurious deep gold satin stretches across the form, glowing in the light much like the golden earth beneath the African sun. Adorned with hand-embellished amber gemstones and silver-lined beads, it pays homage to the rugged beauty of ancient ruins and the enduring strength of the land. To me, this design is the perfect embodiment of my African heritage—a tribute to its expansive golden plains, radiant sun, and the raw power of its natural elements.

Designed as two individual pieces that seamlessly come together as one, this dress balances structure and fluidity. The bodice is fully boned from bust to waist, offering sculpting support and a striking pointed neckline that enhances and accentuates the bust. The skirt, delicately gathered, cascades effortlessly from the hips, flowing in perfect harmony with the cinched silhouette created by the corset.

Origin

To round off the entire collection, I wanted to tie up loose ends perfectly (no pun intended) with a signature piece that embodies the essence of the collection as a whole—'Origin.' A physical manifestation of bloodlines, strength, and a rich fusion of cultures, heritage, and inspiration. This bold piece exudes the confidence and power of its wearer, featuring a striking sweetheart neckline and rich blood-red satin, gracefully embraced by a deeper floral lace embellishment that grows to reach the neck and hemlines.

This piece is fully boned from bust to waist for a perfectly sculpting lift and lined with a deep burnt amber Japanese Dupion Satin for an extra touch of elegance and comfort.

I hope you find comfort in Gaia's embrace, and that it brings you as much joy as it brought me in creating and perfecting it. My hope is that Gaia's Embrace resonates with those who truly connect with its message, fostering a deep appreciation for Mother Nature, heritage, and culture.

Fabrics

I went through a meticulous fabric selection period of 5 months. I spent this time trying to find the perfect fabric for each piece so that they would manifest from sketch to stitch. I wanted to emulate a rustic richness in the majority of my pieces, something that I hadn't witnessed yet in modern fashion. I decided to use Pure Dupion Silk for many of my pieces because it’s just so beautiful—the way it shifts in colour and almost glows depending on the light or the angle you see it from. I also loved how it has this slightly ‘worn-in’ look, with little threads woven through the fabric, almost like they’ve emerged over time. It gives the pieces a kind of effortless, lived-in elegance that feels both natural and timeless

I also discovered a variety of uniquely patterned fabrics that perfectly captured the vintage charm I wanted—whimsical yet effortlessly modern that perfectly brought to life pieces like the Éire Bustier and the Eire Corset. Mimicking patterns found in the ceilings of chapels and vintage gowns in old oil paintings. I incorporated 100% cotton muslin into many of my pieces, often using it for straps. I found it extremely comfortable and kind on the skin, being 100% cotton. It offers the perfect amount of support and comfort in such form fitting and structured shape wear. Cotton muslin was also often used in many historical pieces, so I found it fitting—not only did it emulate the romantic, vintage feeling I was trying to achieve, but it also added a light, airy quality to the designs. The way it drapes and moves feels effortless.
